Happy New Year! We finally made it to 2021, and while that does not necessarily mean things are going to simply get better, it does mean that we have a brand new year to explore!
One of my biggest takeaways from last year was that I need to make more time for self-care. Even if it is twenty minutes for a face mask, a five minute meditation, or some time to chill and watch Youtube, it all counts. Relaxation is essential, and we all deserve to enjoy some quiet time with ourselves.
These are some of my favorite ways to take care of myself, either just because, or if I’m feeling stressed:
I really value spending time writing; about my day, about things I am happy or upset about, or just anything that comes into my mind. Keeping a journal was my best coping mechanism for everything that happened last year, and maybe it could work for some of you too! There is no pressure with what you write, and it works as a personal log to keep to yourself when you need to reflect or air out some thoughts.
Yoga & Meditation
In one of my previous articles, I mentioned the value of doing yoga and meditation to clear my mind. I must admit I am not super consistent with my yoga practice, which is perfectly okay, but I do enjoy following along with a beginners’ video to get active when I want to relax. Yoga With Adriene on Youtube also has 5 minute videos if you tend to be a busy person with little time for self care!
At-Home Spa Day
I love doing face masks as a form of self care! I can do other activities while letting the mask do its work on my face, and it’s a very low maintenance, simple practice. Some of my favorites include the TonyMoly sheet masks or the Aztec Healing Clay Mask! Add water, apply to your face, then relax for fifteen minutes until the clay hardens for you to wash it off. Your skin will thank you 🙂
I was that kid who could never put my book down during class and I still enjoy reading in my leisure time now! It doesn’t have to be a complicated, adult book, you can always pick up your favorite childhood series and reread it to decompress! I loved series like The Hunger Games growing up and recently I have been reading all kinds of books from poetry by Sylvia Plath, to a novel by Joan Didion. Not exactly uplifting literature, but I enjoy it!
